Online Learning at OA
Ocean Academy teachers have been using virtual classrooms and devices since 2016 to offer blended learning to students. Students invest in a device (preferably a laptop, and if not, a tablet) instead of costly text books. Students learn with the G-Suite for Education including Google Classroom, MEET, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more.
Technology is integrated into all aspects of daily teaching and learning. Students may choose to take Technology Hardware and Software electives to learn to repair devices. Students are developing Technology with Purpose, a social enterprise in which they can gain skills and earn school fees and money in their bank accounts (financial literacy) by repairing devices for customers.
Shifting to online learning during the coronavirus was a smooth transition for students who were already familiar with the platforms. Ocean Academy teachers enjoyed engaging students through online games, activities, and projects.
Now, that we are back to face-to-face classes, technology remains incorporated into daily teaching and learning and facilitates:
Emphasis on mastery competencies. Ocean Academy teachers, counselors, and tutors focus on supporting students to reach mastery of skills needed for the next form.
Instilling Hope for the Future. Transitioning between virtual and face-to-face helped to build a sense of hope that we can handle the future, whatever that may be.
Differentiated Instruction and Tutoring. Each teacher plans strategies, based on the students’ needs, to differentiate instruction.
